Kombi-Terminal Ludwigshafen GmbH, KTL for short and an active Agora member, celebrated its 7 millionth rail-side transshipment on May 24, 2024.

Since the terminal was launched in 2000, seven gantry cranes have been used to transfer 7 million loads from truck to rail and vice versa. As a result, just as many truck journeys have been saved and replaced by intermodal transport. As a result, the long distance to the customer, the so-called main route, could be carried out by rail in an eco-efficient and climate-friendly manner. Last year alone, 210,000 tons of CO2 were saved in this way, which will massively relieve inner-city traffic in Ludwigshafen / Mannheim in the long term. KTL reaches the largest economic regions in Europe with up to 23 trains per day directly and in a climate-friendly manner.

The intermodal terminal in Ludwigshafen is one of the largest facilities for transshipment from road to rail in Germany and Europe. The facility is owned by BASF SE. In addition to BASF SE, the shareholders of KTL are Bertschi AG and HOYER GmbH, two well-known service providers in the transport sector, as well as HUPAC SA and Kombiverkehr GmbH, the two largest intermodal operators in Europe. The facility itself is operated by KTL and is open to all shippers in the region. While KTL employed 20 people when it was founded in 1999, it now has 163 employees following two extensions to the terminal.

The Kombi-Terminal Ludwigshafen (KTL) is an example of industrial activity, efficient logistics and sustainable transportation. Two new Volvo FM Electric trucks have been in service since January, and in the coming months the e-fleet will be supplemented by two electric Terbergs as internal transfer vehicles (IBU). "We are starting to familiarize ourselves with electromobility," says KTL Managing Director Harald Schlegel.

The trucks are on the road for KTL's own forwarding company. As a supplement to the combined transport service, this takes over the pre- and onward carriage for customers on the last mile. There are currently 20 vehicles in use, eight of which are KTL's own, and they operate virtually around the clock. KTL has invested in the new e-vehicles and charging infrastructure itself, with the help of KsNI funding.

Auch in den AGORA Terminals ist der Rückgang an Aufkommen im vergangenen Jahr spürbar gewesen. Die Mitglieds-unternehmen verzeichneten 2023 ein Umschlagvolumen von rund 3,7 Mio. Ladeeinheiten. Dies entspricht einem Rückgang von etwa 8 % im Vergleich zum Vorjahr.

In 2024 erwarten die AGORA Mitglieder eine teilweise Kompensation des Umschlagvolumenrückgangs. Das Aufkommen soll ihrer Einschätzung nach um durchschnittlich ca. 3 % steigen. Insbesondere der Ausbau von Umschlagkapazitäten an mehreren Standorten trägt zur leichten Erholung bei. 

Die Infrastrukturunternehmen sowie Eisenbahnverkehrsunternehmen und Kombiverkehr-Operateure werden aufgerufen, mit der Erbringung von hochwertigen KV-Produkten ihren Beitrag dazu zu leisten.

Über AGORA Intermodal Terminals

Die Arbeitsgruppe AGORA Intermodal Terminals wurde im Jahre 2011 aus einem EU-Projekt heraus gegründet. Der Ansatz dieser Arbeitsgruppe besteht darin, die Terminalbetreiber zusammen zu bringen, um damit den Informations? und Ideenaustausch und das gemeinsame Lernen zu fördern im Hinblick auf „Good Practices“ im Terminalmanagement, Steigerung der Terminalkapazitäten und Verbesserung der Interaktion mit den KV?Operateuren, Eisenbahnverkehrsunternehmen und anderen KV?Akteuren. Die zurzeit 20 Mitgliedsunternehmen betreiben über 60 KV-Terminals mit einer Gesamtkapazität von rd. 5,5 Mio. Ladeeinheiten. The decline in transport volumes was also noticeable at the AGORA terminals last year. The member companies recorded a handling volume of around Loading unites 3.7 million. This corresponds to a decline of around 8% compared to the previous year.

In 2024, AGORA members expect the decline in handling volumes from 2023 to be partially offset. They estimate that volumes will increase by around 3% compared to 2023. In particular, the expansion of handling capacities at several terminals is contributing to the slight catch-up trend.

Infrastructure companies, Railway undertakings and Combined transport operators are being called upon to contribute to this by providing high-quality CT products.

The AGORA Intermodal Terminals Working Group was established in 2011 as a result of an EU project. Das erste Workshop des Jahres 2024 fand bei unserem Neumitglied der Maxi Terminal Hamm GmbH (MTH) statt. Am 20.03.2024 konnten sich die AGORA Mitglieder die Besonderheiten des neu gebauten Terminals im Detail anschauen.

MTH ist ein Störfallbetrieb und kann somit Gefahrstoffe nicht nur umschlagen und transportbedingt abstellen, sondern auch lagern. Der hierfür notwendige Genehmigungsprozess kann als herausfordernd bezeichnet werden, zumal während des Prozesses die neue TRGS 510 zur Lagerung von Gefahrstoffen in ortsbeweglichen Behältern mit deutlich verschärften Vorschriften verabschiedet wurde. Folge dieser Vorschriften ist u.a. die halbautomatische Brandbekämpfungsanlage, die als Auflage seitens der Behörde gefordert und final auch gebaut wurde.

Eine weitere Besonderheit stellt sicherlich der sogenannte “75to Kran” dar, der in der Lage ist, die schweren BASF Tank Class Container mit einem Gesamtgewicht von bis zu 75 to umzuschlagen. Damit ist es der ersten Kran außerhalb des BASF Werks in Ludwigshafen, der diese schweren Ladeeinheiten heben kann. Auch die Stapelhöhe von 1 über 6 ist für ein KV-Terminal enorm. Die Bedienung des Portalkrans kann per Fernsteuerstand oder einem “Bauchladen” stattfinden, zusätzlich befindet sich eine Notkabine am Kran selbst, die im Fall eines Systemausfalls genutzt werden kann. Wieder einmal fand eine Diskussion über die Vor- und Nachteile des Umschlags mit dem Fernsteuerstand statt.

Zu den weitere Themen, die am Folgetag diskutiert wurden, gehörte der Bericht zum aktuellen Stand des JNS/AMOC Verfahren zum Transport und sicherer Verladung von Sattelanhänger auf Taschenwagen sowie die Wirkungsgrad der Umstellung auf LED Beleuchtung, die durchweg als hoch eingestuft wurde mit 40 bis 60 % Energieeinsparungspotential.

Weiterhin wurde das Projekt RailSync vorgestellt, das von HHLA Next initiiert wurde und sich nun in der Ausgründung befindet. RailSync bietet ein Dashboard an, das die Zugbewegungen im Zulauf der KV-Terminals visualisiert und damit Zug-Slotmanagement basierend auf real time daten erlaubt. Als Anstoß für Weiterentwicklungspotential des Tools haben die AGORA Mitglieder Vorschläge für Planänderungen bei Zugverspätungen identifiziert. Wir sind gespannt, ob dies umgesetzt wird.

The first workshop of 2024 took place at our new member Maxi Terminal Hamm GmbH (MTH). On 20.03.2024, AGORA members were able to take a detailed look at the special features of the newly built terminal.

MTH is a hazardous incident company and can therefore not only handle hazardous substances in the interim storage area, but also store them. The approval process required for this can be described as challenging, especially as the new TRGS 510 for the storage of hazardous substances in portable loading units with significantly stricter regulations was passed during the process. One of the consequences of these regulations is the semi-automatic fire-fighting system, which was required by the authorities and finally built.

Another special feature is certainly the so-called “75-ton crane”, which is capable of handling heavy BASF Tank Class containers with a total weight of up to 75 tons. This makes it the first crane outside the BASF plant in Ludwigshafen that can lift these heavy loading units. The stacking height of 1 over 6 is also enormous for a CT terminal. The gantry crane can be operated from a remote control station or from a portable remote, and there is also an emergency cabin on the crane itself that can be used in the event of a system failure. Once again, there was a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of handling with the remote control stations.

Other topics discussed on the following day included a report on the current status of the JNS/AMOC process for the transportation and safe loading of semi-trailers onto pocket wagons and the efficiency of the switch to LED lighting, which was consistently rated as high with an energy saving potential of 40 to 60 %.

The RailSync project, which was initiated by HHLA Next and is now in the spin-off phase, was also presented. RailSync offers a dashboard that visualizes the incoming trains of the CT terminals and thus enables train slot management based on real-time data. AGORA members have identified suggestions for plan changes in the event of train delays as an impetus for further development of the tool. We are curious to see whether this will be implemented.
